Complaints About Yani Neko Appear at the BPO
The BPO has returned to the news because of the anime Yani Neko. Some Japanese viewers complained about an anime that portrays a world where humans and “beastmen” live together in society. The story follows a young cat-like character who constantly smokes, along with other events involving her friends.
The Japanese viewers who submitted complaints felt uncomfortable with the anime showing drug-related scenes on television.

According to the summary released by the BPO, some viewers criticized the anime, stating that smoking scenes appeared frequently and that certain moments could be interpreted as references to illegal drug use.
The complaints questioned whether this type of representation was appropriate, even though the anime was broadcast during late-night hours.
One member of the committee highlighted that the broadcast schedule already showed consideration from the production team to avoid exposing children to the content, since the anime aired during a late-night time slot.
It was also pointed out that the series never clearly states that the characters were using illegal drugs. Because of this, the person responsible for the analysis considered that the scenes remained within the limits of freedom of expression.
Another BPO member also commented on the difference between animation and live-action productions. According to him, if the same scenes had appeared in a live-action drama, the impact could have been different.
In his opinion, because it is an animated work, the effect on children and teenagers would be more limited, keeping the production within the boundaries of creative freedom.
Despite the opinions supporting the anime, some members expressed concern about scenes considered ambiguous.
One member stated that, at a time when drug-related problems are a social issue in Japan, it would be better to avoid representations that could lead to misunderstandings.
He specifically mentioned a scene involving an injection, questioning whether that moment could be interpreted as anything other than a reference to drug use, such as methamphetamine.

The Broadcasting Ethics & Program Improvement Organization (BPO) is a Japanese organization created to monitor ethical issues related to television and radio programs in Japan.
