You may not know this if you are new to the world of anime, but Yandere is one of the most famous character archetypes in anime… even though it has become less common lately.
Whether in anime or games, a yandere character usually starts by treating the protagonist in a sweet, kind, and affectionate way. But that can quickly change when her love turns into an unhealthy obsession.
That is when things start to get dangerous.
What is Yandere?
The term Yandere is used to describe characters who show extremely intense love or passion for someone and may develop obsessive, possessive, and even violent behavior to protect or stay with the person they love
The word comes from the combination of “yanderu,” which is related to being mentally or emotionally disturbed, and “deredere,” an expression used to describe someone who is deeply in love and extremely affectionate.
Basically, the idea is a character who shows a lot of love and affection, but whose feelings eventually take a very disturbing turn.
At first, a yandere character may seem innocent, caring, and affectionate. However, as her obsession grows, she may begin to display extreme behavior, especially when she becomes jealous or believes someone is threatening her relationship.
When something triggers their jealousy, these characters may act impulsively and even violently. Their obsession with their love interest can become so intense that they develop a strong need to stay close to the person they love.
But remember: Yandere is not a disease or a psychological diagnosis. It is a fictional character archetype used to represent this extreme form of love and obsession.

Yuno Gasai (Future Diary)
One of the most iconic yandere characters in anime, Yuno Gasai is completely obsessed with the protagonist, Yukiteru Amano.
She is deeply in love with Yukiteru and is willing to do practically anything to make sure the two of them can stay together.
This includes eliminating anyone she considers a threat to their relationship, making Yuno one of the most dangerous and well-known characters when it comes to the yandere archetype.
Kotonoha Katsura (School Days)
Kotonoha Katsura starts out as a shy, kind, and very reserved girl.
However, as the events of School Days progress, her emotional state deteriorates because of everything that happens involving Makoto Itou and Sekai Saionji.
She eventually reaches an extremely disturbed psychological state, particularly after experiencing rejection, betrayal, and other traumatic events.
Her behavior toward the end of the story is one of the main reasons Kotonoha became a character frequently associated with the yandere archetype.
