Summer Snow Visual Novel Makes You Escape a Time Loop by Following Missions From a Mysterious App
Summer Snow is a new mystery visual novel announced by the Japanese indie studio Cynical Honey, and it immediately caught my attention because of its time loop concept and its beautiful visuals.
Summer Snow follows Akira Setouchi, a second-year high school student who returns to his seaside hometown during summer vacation. After being betrayed by his girlfriend, Akira begins distancing himself from the people around him. Feeling overwhelmed by his school relationships, he believes that spending some time away is the best choice.
However, after returning to his old hometown, something unexpected happens: his life becomes trapped in a mysterious time loop.
During his stay, Akira meets a mysterious girl who asks him to “grant a certain girl’s wish.” After going to sleep, he wakes up and realizes that the previous day has repeated itself exactly as before.
On top of that, a strange app called MAZE appears installed on his phone, bringing a mysterious message: “avoid the confession.”
Summer Snow Visual Novel Has Players Searching for a Way Out of the Loop
In Summer Snow, the protagonist must follow the missions left by the MAZE app while searching for a way to escape the endless cycle. To do so, Akira needs to find an “exit key” by using his own memories, emotions, and connections with the people around him.
The tasks provided by the app are not clearly explained, forcing players to pay attention to details, analyze clues, and discover which actions can move the story forward.
As a mystery visual novel, the choices made throughout the adventure can change small parts of the dialogue and reveal new information about Akira’s past, his friends, and his hometown.
While trying to break the time loop, Akira begins to understand the people he had left behind. Some of his old friends discover his situation and decide to help him find a solution.
However, his decisions can also end up hurting others or even himself. Although there are no bad endings, the day will continue repeating until Akira finds a way to move forward.
Summer Snow is scheduled to release in 2027 for Windows via Steam. The game will feature a fully voiced Japanese script and an official English localization.
Okay, I’m really excited about this game. The idea seems very interesting, the visuals look beautiful, and it’s amazing to see such a promising project being developed by an indie studio.
