MangaPlus Adds Content Warning to Manga After Complaints
Recently, MangaPlus from Shueisha started making the manga Soon You’ll Paint Your Heart Out, by Neguse Okita (I’m assuming the author is a woman based on the name), available on the platform.
The story follows a woman named Airi Aikawa, who currently works as a mangaka. However, what she hides from her entire family is that she makes adult manga.
Her hometown is in the countryside, and she has a childhood friend there named Hinaki, who is 9 years younger than her. One day, after discovering that Hinaki is having financial problems and is about to give up on art college, Airi suggests that he move in with her when he goes to college, since she lives in the big city.
Years pass, and Hinaki finally gets ready to enter college. But as soon as Airi sees him, she barely recognizes him because he is now a young man!
The manga then presents the following situation: Airi is a 27-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN who draws adult manga, while Hinaki is her childhood friend, who is now 18 and has started college.
The two begin living together, and from that point on, Airi starts becoming very conscious of Hinaki’s presence. It doesn’t help that her editor starts teasing Airi and encouraging her to make a move on Hinaki:
So, Soon You’ll Paint Your Heart Out is about a 27-year-old woman with no experience with men who begins to realize that the little boy who used to be her childhood friend back in the countryside has grown up, is now taller than her, and is starting to occupy her thoughts.
I should mention that many comments hated the manga, accused the author of all sorts of things, and said horrible things about the story. The fact that Hinaki is 18 didn’t matter to these people.
After the manga received several negative comments, MangaPlus added this content warning:
This warning appears when you open the manga’s page. It says:
“This story contains sensitive content that may be disturbing to some readers. Reader discretion is advised.”
Among the early reactions, people made all kinds of accusations against the manga, with some saying that it depicts a crime even though the young man is currently 18. Many also hoped that the two would not become romantically involved, with some people preferring Airi to end up with her editor instead.
Anyway… personally, I don’t see ANYTHING THAT SERIOUS about this manga, especially since Hinaki is 18 now, meaning he is an adult. I have read up to chapter 19, and at the moment there are 24 chapters available.
