Japanese Underground Idol Posts Creepy Photo With a Ghost-Like Face Hidden in the Background

In the world of Japanese chika idols (also known as underground idols), any mention of dating can set off alarm bells among their most devoted fans. But what initially looked like an innocent social media post quickly turned into something straight out of a Japanese horror movie.
It all started when Aru Muga, a member of the Japanese idol group GALNOA, posted a cute selfie on X with the classic caption: “I don’t have a boyfriend, okay?”
So far, everything seemed to follow the usual Japanese idol industry script. But things took a strange turn when the idol encouraged her followers to take a closer look at the picture: “Actually, there’s a man in there… Did you notice him? Look closely.”
From Romantic Post to Full-Blown Horror Experience
Check out her photo:

When internet users zoomed in to solve the mystery, they didn’t find a silly reflection or a pet cat. Instead, they spotted a terrifying apparition hidden in the corner of the picture.
The hidden “face” in the bottom corner: A pale, distorted human-like silhouette can be seen lurking near the bottom of the photo, immediately bringing to mind the ghosts from classic J-horror movies like The Grudge (Ju-On).

Japanese Forums React to the Creepy Image
The picture quickly went viral across Japanese forums and aggregation sites, triggering a hilarious mix of genuine panic and jokes from the community:
- “I thought it was just a male cat, so I zoomed in… I let out such a weird scream I almost gave myself a heart attack. What a scare!”
- “She doesn’t have a boyfriend, but apparently she’s got plenty of guardian spirits following her around…”
- “Look in the bottom-right corner! That’s terrifying! Someone tell me what that is before I completely lose my ability to sleep!”
- “It looks like that creepy old guy from the game The Exit 8 (8-ban Deguchi)!”
- “I thought she was saying she looked like a boy, but then I saw the background… I nearly pissed myself!”
Weird details and barely noticeable reflections appearing in the backgrounds of Japanese celebrities’ photos are nothing new when it comes to getting the local internet buzzing. But this time, the scare was impossible to miss.
However, it turns out ChatGPT was apparently behind the whole thing (and I only found that out moments before publishing this article, so here I am adding this part). In a follow-up tweet, the idol commented:
“Chappie-kun turned this into a photo with spirits.”
“Chappie-kun” is a nickname some Japanese people use when referring to ChatGPT. So, in the end, it seems she deliberately created the creepy image to get more attention.
