Control Two Maids Saving Their Master in Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark

gal guardians review

I played the first Gal Guardians, which has the subtitle Demon Purge. The game was okay. It’s basically like Castlevania, but with waifus and COOP. You have no idea how badly I want to see more Castlevania games with COOP.

I finished Demon Purge with my brother and thought the game was fun. Then, years later, they released a new game, Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark, which introduces two new characters for you to control. This time, you’re on the side of the “bad guys”…

In Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark, you control the maids Kirika and Masha. The game starts with the two of them on vacation, taking a well-deserved break after working so hard. When they return to the castle, they discover that they now need to find the scattered bones of Demon Lord Maxim in order to revive him and restore his power.

That’s because the head maid was a traitor all along and was serving another lord. So now it’s time to recover Maxim’s body!

As you explore, you’ll need to search for hidden passages, secret doors, and solve puzzles to progress through the map. New abilities and sub-weapons also allow you to access previously blocked areas.

You can also find other servants of Maxim who died throughout the map. Once you revive them, they start helping you in various ways.

Two sisters, two combat styles

Kirika and Masha have very different ways of fighting. Kirika specializes in long-range attacks using pistols, while Masha uses her whip to fight enemies up close.

Both can also use sub-weapons by spending demonic energy. Because of this, switching between the characters is important when dealing with different types of enemies and situations.

I usually played like this: while exploring the map, discovering passages, and fighting enemies, I preferred using Masha and her whip. I find her easier to use. Against bosses, however, I prefer Kirika, since she can attack from a distance with her pistols.

If you play alone, you can switch between the two at any time. But the game also features COOP, where one player controls Masha and the other controls Kirika.

If one of the sisters is defeated, she can be revived using a system called “Sister Rescue.”

I mentioned that the two protagonists in this game are different from the ones in the first game, and I have to say that they are just as great. I really liked Masha and Kirika, just like I liked the two protagonists from the first game. They’re all cute.

Now I have to talk about something pretty bad about the game because, if you check its Steam page, you’ll see that the reviews are currently “Mixed.” Here’s the problem…

The save points and fast travel locations are HORRIBLE!

The game is fun, the story is simple but entertaining, and the game looks great. The only thing I really disliked is that the save points and fast travel locations are terribly placed.

You’ll have to walk a lot just to save your game at a save point or travel to another area. I don’t remember having this problem in the first game, but it happened quite often here.

If you don’t really care about that, I recommend BOTH games, Demon Purge and Servants of the Dark.

It’s basically Castlevania with waifus!
