Enako Defends Freedom in Cosplay After Criticism for Showing Her Bra

Known as one of Japan’s most popular cosplayers, Enako also works in music, YouTube, and gravure modeling. During a recent livestream, she appeared wearing a race queen outfit, which did not sit well with everyone.
Some internet users questioned whether that type of outfit could really be considered cosplay. Cosplayer Shizuki Yukina criticized the situation, saying that Enako’s outfit did not contain elements related to any specific character or series. Basically, the main criticism was that Enako had her bra fully visible as part of her cosplay.
According to Yukina, there is an important distinction between cosplay, gravure modeling, and other forms of entertainment. In her view, calling every type of outfit cosplay could confuse the public about what the practice actually means.

Other internet users agreed with the criticism and defended a more traditional view, in which cosplay is directly connected to portraying fictional characters.
On the other hand, many fans came to Enako’s defense. One argument was that there are different ways to enjoy cosplay: some people focus on recreating characters as accurately as possible, while others simply enjoy wearing outfits they find beautiful or fun.
It was also pointed out that Enako works professionally as a gravure idol. Because of this, her supporters argue that it would make little sense to demand that she only appear in licensed character costumes.
Enako, Freedom in Cosplay After Criticism for Showing Her Bra
As the discussion gained traction on social media, Enako decided to address the topic on X. She explained that everyone can have their own definition, ideas, or philosophy about cosplay, but she does not believe anyone should impose their views on others.

The cosplayer also recalled that when she started her career 17 years ago, it was common for cosplayers to do their own makeup, style their wigs, and even make their own costumes.
Even so, Enako believes cosplay is, above all, a form of personal enjoyment. Because of this, she does not think it is right to say someone is not a real cosplayer simply because they did not make their own costume, do not wear a wig, or do not try to perfectly recreate a character’s appearance.
For her, everyone should have the freedom to decide how they want to enjoy cosplay.
Enako also said that she does not intend to dismiss the opinions of people who do not consider her a real cosplayer. According to her, everyone has their own ideal image of what a cosplayer should be.
What she does not want is for the community to become an environment where people have to follow certain rules to earn the title of cosplayer.
The Japanese star also emphasized that she will continue working as a cosplayer while taking on activities outside of cosplay, including work as a gravure idol.
Enako’s statement received support from many fans, who agreed that there is no single correct way to practice or enjoy cosplay.
