After 30 years without magical girl anime, Studio Pierrot has finally returned to the genre with the anime Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly, which is currently airing and has given the producer a lot to talk about.

Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly represents an important shift in Studio Pierrot’s history. According to the studio’s producers, the idea was to create something that followed the tradition of their classic magical series, but without repeating the intense battle-driven format that has dominated many of their recent projects.

This decision also came from an internal need. Teams used to working on action-heavy productions expressed a desire to create something lighter. The result was the anime Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly, a magical girl story with a much softer tone.

It was revealed that Pierrot had an internal rule of “no battles,” as producer Fukui explained:

“Our company has produced numerous works like Naruto and Bleach that lean heavily into battles, but this time the producer in charge [of LuluttoLilly] was like: ‘I’m so tired of battles (laughs).’”

“In the current day and age when it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by information overload, we felt there was a need for an anime with a gentler and more soothing worldview. Instead of an anime you have to watch with your eyes glued to the screen, we wanted something you can casually watch while you unwind.”

This makes me think about other anime or game studios that focus only on one type of production. It must really be tiring to work on the same style all the time, and it’s always good to change things up a bit, right?

Synopsis of Magical Sisters LuluttoLilly:

Fuu Nonoyama and Rui Nonoyama are sisters from a “magical land” who were once close but have grown apart. Suddenly, they are given magical powers by two cat-like spirits, Uguisu and Azuki, allowing them to transform into magical girl idols. However, there is a catch: these powers only last for one year, and they cannot tell anyone that magic exists. Although neither Fuu nor Rui knows the other is also a magical girl, they both begin their careers as idols.
