The Witch Hat Atelier anime has finally received new details about its production period, putting an end to rumors that had been circulating among fans for quite some time. Producer Hiroaki Kojima explained that although the project internally started in 2019, the actual anime production lasted around 3 and a half years, not 7 years as many believed.

The information was shared by Hiroaki Kojima himself, who commented that Bug Films only officially joined the project in 2023. Before that, the adaptation was being handled by Avex Pictures and Kodansha, but development only gained momentum after the animation studio became involved.

According to Kojima, the Witch Hat Atelier anime was the longest project he has ever worked on. Even so, the producer emphasized that all the effort was worth it in order to deliver a faithful adaptation of Kamome Shirahama’s manga. The staff carefully worked to recreate the detailed art style of the series using an impressive combination of hand-drawn 2D animation and 3D CGI.

Another important point was Kamome Shirahama’s direct involvement during production. The manga creator helped supervise several details to ensure that the essence of the story was preserved in the anime.

Although 3 and a half years sounds shorter than the rumors suggested, it is still considered a long production period within the industry. On average, a 12-episode anime usually takes about one year to complete.

One thing many people do not understand is the period between deciding that an anime will be made and when production actually begins. Once the decision is made, production does not always start immediately. Sometimes it takes years to gather the team and truly begin animating.
