Why Studio Ghibli Does Not Allow Streaming in Japan

Studio Ghibli does not allow streaming in Japan, and it remains one of the most unusual decisions in the anime industry. While fans around the world can watch the studio’s classics through digital platforms, Japanese viewers still cannot find most of the catalog available online in their own country.

At present, only one Studio Ghibli-produced film has been released on streaming services in Japan: Grave of the Fireflies. However, the reason is unique. The rights to the film were not controlled by Studio Ghibli, allowing it to be distributed differently from the rest of the studio’s works.

Why Studio Ghibli Does Not Allow Streaming in Japan

The topic resurfaced during a recent press conference held by Nippon TV, the company that acquired Studio Ghibli as a subsidiary in 2023.

During the event, an attendee asked whether the lack of streaming access could eventually cause some of the studio’s films to be forgotten by the public. The suggestion was to make the titles available through Hulu Japan, a platform owned by the same corporate group.

However, Nippon TV president Hiroyuki Fukuda stated that there are currently no plans to do so.

According to him, both Nippon TV and Studio Ghibli believe that the films retain a special value when they are broadcast through the long-running Friday Roadshow television program.

For those involved, television broadcasts continue to turn each screening into a special event for viewers.

Studio Ghibli Movies Remain Popular Without Streaming

Although many people see streaming as essential today, the studio believes there are other ways to keep its works relevant.

These include the famous Ghibli Museum in Tokyo, the Ghibli Park theme park, traveling exhibitions held across Japan, and even stage adaptations based on its films.

In addition, the movies remain widely available for purchase on physical media in Japan, a format that still maintains a significant market in the country.

This strategy shows that Studio Ghibli prefers a more traditional approach to its catalog, relying on events, in-person experiences, and special broadcasts instead of permanent availability on streaming platforms.

Could Studio Ghibli Movies Come to Streaming in Japan in the Future?

Despite its current position, the possibility has not been completely ruled out.

Hiroyuki Fukuda stated that the company is aware of public demand and that discussions will continue in the future. However, there are currently no announcements or timelines regarding the release of Studio Ghibli films on Japanese streaming services.
