Atlus Confirms Persona 4 Censorship: Yosuke Was Altered to Adapt to “Modern Times”

During an interview held at Anime Expo 2026, Persona General Producer Kazuhisa Wada revealed that Persona 4 Revival will feature some changes to make the experience more suitable for modern audiences.
According to him, the team did not make major changes to the story or the personalities of the characters, but some adjustments were made mainly to Yosuke.
One of the main characters in Persona 4, Yosuke, has received criticism over the years for some attitudes and dialogue that have “aged poorly”, in his words.

According to Kazuhisa Wada, Yosuke will still maintain his essence, but certain behaviors were adjusted to better match the values and worldview of the current era.
“He is a little insensitive in the way he treats outsiders sometimes. So we wanted to soften that and make it a little more fitting for the world we live in now,” explained the producer.
The reason behind the changes to Yosuke in the Persona 4 remake
In the original game, Yosuke represented the archetype of the “popular and playful” teenager, with attitudes that were more common in Japanese stories from that era. However, some moments involving the character, especially those related to Kanji and other comedic situations, became targets of complaints, with many players accusing him of being homophobic.

Fans also noticed small changes in dialogue shown in Persona 4 Revival trailers. Some of the character’s old lines were replaced with versions considered less controversial, indicating that Atlus intends to update some aspects of his personality without changing his role within the story.
Persona 4 Revival promises to maintain the essence of the original game
Despite confirming this change, the team responsible for the remake reinforces that the intention is not to completely modify the characters or the main narrative.
They said that the goal of Persona 4 Revival appears to be preserving the identity of the classic while adjusting elements that may not work as well for modern audiences…. In other words, they lied about keeping the “identity of the classic” and are modifying everything.
Expect a fully censored Persona 4, just as Japanese fans predicted. Being honest, I think they probably changed everything. “Maintaining the essence of the original story?” Nah, these guys modified everything and lied straight to our faces about it.
