657 People Have Naruto Character Names in Indonesia
Having Naruto character names has gone beyond being a simple choice for anime fans and has officially become part of birth records in Indonesia. Hundreds of people in the country have been given names inspired by Naruto characters, while others were named after characters from Doraemon and One Piece.
According to data from Indonesia’s Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration, released in August, 347 people in the country have the name Uzumaki or Naruto.
The anime influence doesn’t stop there. The data also identified 181 people named Nobita, the character best known as Doraemon’s friend, as well as 79 people registered as D. Luffy, referring to the protagonist of One Piece.
Even Doraemon himself, the famous blue robotic cat, appeared in the official records: 16 people were officially registered with the character’s name.
The institution’s director, Teguh Setyabudi, commented on the records and revealed that some names stood out. Among them were eight people named Suneo, another well-known character from Doraemon.
According to Setyabudi, naming trends among Indonesians have also changed over the generations. Instead of following only traditional or family-related names, many younger parents have started looking for inspiration in characters and figures who were part of their childhood.

Anime isn’t the only source of inspiration, either. The same registry also includes thousands of people with the names of international celebrities, including artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Selena Gomez. (Indonesia is pretty wild, huh?)
The number of Naruto character names found in the records shows just how much influence anime has gained in the country.
