Madoka Magica: Why Is Sayaka Wearing Madoka’s Dress in HomuSaya Fanart?
On August 29, the new Madoka Magica movie, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten, hit Japanese theaters. The movie is a direct sequel to Rebellion.
And, for some reason, after the movie premiered, a ton of fanart started popping up online showing Sayaka wearing Madoka’s dress and being shipped with Homura.
I was like: WAIT, WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?
Even though I’ve been a fan of Madoka Magica since the anime first aired in 2011, I never really took part in the franchise’s fandom. So, as far as I knew, the main ships were basically the ones I considered the most obvious in the story: Homura x Madoka and Sayaka x Kyouko.
So this was the first time I’d ever heard about the Sayaka x Homura ship, also known as HomuSaya or SayaHomu.
From what I’ve researched, this is actually a pretty old ship that has had its fans in the Madoka Magica community for quite some time. I was surprised I’d never heard about it, but it seems the new movie has made this pairing considerably more popular.
Why Did Fanart of Sayaka Wearing Madoka’s Dress Become So Popular?
To be fair, I don’t know any spoilers for Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten.
I have absolutely no idea what actually happens in the movie. What I’ve seen veeeeeery briefly online is that Homura and Sayaka have quite a few interactions throughout the story.
I don’t know exactly what the nature of those interactions is, though, and I honestly can’t even imagine what they’re about.
But the result is that a bunch of fanart featuring the two of them started appearing. And a lot of it has Sayaka wearing Madoka’s dress, sometimes even with her hair styled similarly to Madoka’s.
And just look at some of the fanart that started popping up:
And it didn’t stop at fanart. We even got cosplay:
As you can see, Sayaka is wearing Madoka’s dress, and in some of these jokes, she even has her hair styled similarly to Madoka’s.
Japanese Fans Are Loving HomuSaya
And I’m not the only one who was confused by this sudden explosion of HomuSaya.

Some of the reactions included:

- “My X feed has started showing me this everywhere.”
- “Homura stole Sayaka from Kyoko, and now she has to team up with the ‘ugly four-eyes’ instead.”

- “I prefer this kind of approach from when SayaHomu first started becoming popular.”

All of this makes me even more curious to watch the movie and finally find out WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON in it.
