Kurosu Gatari Started Drawing Netorare After Failing as a Shonen Author

The hentai mangaka Kurosu Gatari explained in an interview that his career started in a very different way from what many fans imagine. Before working in the adult market, Kurosu Gatari tried to find success with shounen manga.
According to the artist, he started by working on manga aimed at the shounen audience, but eventually realized he would not be able to achieve the success needed to continue in that field. It was during this phase that he decided to completely change directions and start drawing hentai.

Kurosu Gatari even said that before working with adult content, he worked as an assistant for mangakas until he eventually tried creating his own shonen manga

During the interview, the author explained that his decision was not immediate, but rather the result of a genuine attempt to pursue a career in traditional manga. He stated that he spent a period working with shounen, but that path “did not bear fruit,” which led him to rethink his professional career.
That was when he moved into adult content, where he found more opportunities for growth and stability as an artist. For Kurosu, that change ended up becoming decisive for his career.

After the transition, the artist began working exclusively with hentai and doujinshi. He explained that, despite the differences between the markets, many of a mangaka’s goals can also be achieved within the adult segment.
He became very famous in the community because of his series “Darkest Desire”, a netorare manga series where wives cheat on their husbands with foreigners.

Kurosu Gatari explained that he chose this specific theme for 2 reasons. The 1st was because he wanted to become popular with foreign audiences, which is why there are foreigners in the manga, and the 2nd was to differentiate himself from the netorare manga market, since at the time most works were very similar to each other.
Finally, for Kurosu Gatari, the main difference between becoming a traditional shonen author and drawing adult manga lies in the limitations regarding TV adaptations, something much more common in traditional manga. Even so, Kurosu stated that he is satisfied with his choice and said he has no plans to return to shounen.
Kurosu Gatari’s story is similar to Hirune’s story (which we covered here some time ago), who also started as a mangaka trying to make his battle manga successful, but after it got canceled, he decided to move into hentai.
