5-Year-Old Girl Asks to Watch an “Anime Where Someone Dies” and Is Recommended Madoka

An unusual case involving a 5-year-old girl who asked to watch an “anime where someone dies” went viral on Twitter. The result of this choice sparked a wave of reactions and jokes online, mainly due to the dark tone of the work chosen.
The story began when a Japanese Twitter user reported that his young cousin wanted to watch an “anime where someone dies.” Trying to fulfill the request in a “safe” way, he suggested an apparently cute anime about magical girls.

The problem is that the chosen anime was Puella Magi Madoka Magica, known for completely subverting genre expectations. It was then revealed that the child watched up to episode three — the point where the story drastically shifts tone and becomes much heavier and emotionally intense.
Although Puella Magi Madoka Magica starts with a cute “magical girl” aesthetic, the series quickly reveals dark themes, loss, and deep psychological consequences, making the story much darker overall.
According to the tweet’s author, the little girl was eating sweets while watching episodes 1 and 2, but when episode 3 ended, her hand stopped reaching for the snacks.

On social media, users reacted with dark humor, saying the situation felt like a “Kyubey-style contract,” referencing the cat-like character from the series. Others commented that the adult had “literally fulfilled the child’s request,” but in the worst possible way.
Some suggested Yuki Yuna Is a Hero, describing it in a seemingly light tone that hides a heavy narrative. Others mentioned Fafner in the Azure as a “lesson about the value of life,” which is also far from child-friendly content.
There were even jokes suggesting Made in Abyss, known for starting with a cute aesthetic and evolving into an extremely dark and traumatic story.
In any case, the Twitter author said he felt proud, believing his cousin will grow up to become a respectable adult after this experience.
