Published by Kodansha through the Magazine Pocket (Magapoke) app, Mii-chan to Yamada-san follows the story of Mii-chan and Yamada-san, two women living in Kabukicho, Shinjuku, in 2012.

The story follows Yamada-san, a nightclub hostess, and Mii-chan, a young woman considered “a little slow” by those around her. The manga currently has six published volumes, has surpassed 2.8 million copies in circulation, and ranked 4th in the male readers category of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2026. The seventh volume will be the series’ final one.

Why Is Mii-chan to Yamada-san Controversial?

Despite the celebration, part of the public reacted with concern and ANGER over the anime adaptation announcement. On social media, many questioned whether the series should be allowed to air for audiences under 18, while others expressed concerns about how its themes could affect different viewers.

Among the comments, some readers argued that the manga works better in its original format, while others said the adaptation could generate controversy because it deals with highly sensitive topics.

To better explain the situation, the manga centers on Yamada (the blonde woman) and Mii-chan (the younger girl). Yamada works as a nightclub hostess to earn money, and one day a new girl starts working at the same club.

That girl is Mii-chan, who has little education, cannot read kanji, lacks common sense, and struggles with everyday tasks. In one scene, Mii-chan is sitting with a customer alongside another hostess who bullies her. The hostess and the customer force Mii-chan to read a kanji character.

Mii-chan cannot read it, and they begin laughing at her. The manga contains many, many uncomfortable moments like this.

Animator Harshly Criticizes the Adaptation

Animator Terumi Nishii, known for her work on DEATH NOTE, Kimi ni Todoke, Mawaru Penguindrum, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable, and Jujutsu Kaisen, also commented on the announcement on social media.

In a series of posts, she said she despises everyone involved in the Mii-chan to Yamada-san anime and especially criticized those who approved the adaptation, claiming they abandoned their sensitivity in pursuit of popularity and money.

In another post, she compared the work to old “freak shows,” arguing that this kind of portrayal should not be defended under the banner of freedom of expression. According to her, the issue is not depicting people with disabilities, but the perspective adopted by the story.

The animator argued that the series turns those people into a spectacle and said the producers should clearly explain the project’s intentions.

Official Account Releases Statement

The Mii-chan to Yamada-san team released a statement following the controversy surrounding the anime announcement. They stated that the work was never created with the intention of discriminating against or looking down on people with disabilities or any other group.
