First Penguin Requiem has Two Girls Facing Aberrants/SCPs/Anomalies
Recently, Tadano Natsu started publishing an interesting manga called First Penguin Requiem, which tells the story of two girls who are part of the “Leaders”, a group that faces anomalies/SCPs/aberrants, whatever you prefer to call them.
If by any chance you don’t know what SCP/Anomalies/aberrants are, below are the definitions I managed to find:
SCP
SCP is the abbreviation for Secure, Contain, Protect. It refers to objects, creatures, locations, phenomena, or anomalous entities that defy the known laws of nature. In SCP Foundation fiction, these elements are identified, studied, and contained to prevent them from becoming a threat to humanity.
Anomaly
An anomaly is any object, being, event, location, or phenomenon that presents properties impossible or unexplained by the currently known laws of science. Anomalies can be harmless, beneficial, dangerous, or even represent existential risks, depending on their characteristics.
Aberrants
It normally refers to beings, creatures, or individuals that are deformed, mutated, or that deviate from normal nature. The term is usually used to describe living entities.
What I notice is that the two are basically very similar things, but SCP is popular in the West and anomaly is popular in Japan.
First Penguin Requiem has Two Cute Girls Facing Anomalies/SCPs
In First Penguin Requiem, there are aberrants hidden in the shadows, away from everyone’s eyes. And there are those who oppose them: the Leaders, disposable “first penguins” who are forced to protect humanity.
Kino and Azu are two of these Leaders who do not even know their own origins. Once again, they head out on a new mission, where death lurks around every corner, dreaming of the day when they will finally achieve their freedom.
So far, we only have 2 chapters. This is a monthly manga, you know, and I read both chapters, and from what was presented, the story works like this.
Kino and Azu are girls who are part of the Leaders. From what I could see and understand, their mission is not to defeat the aberrants, but rather to make contact with them and discover as much information as possible about them so that those who come after can defeat them.
I say this because in chapter 1, the two are sent to a school where deaths are happening, and they do not defeat the aberrant. They end up escaping, and they are told to obtain as much information as possible.
And in chapter 2 as well, they end up entering a house where time does not pass inside, they cannot open any doors, and in the end they leave the house without defeating the being that is there.
When this manga was released, it made a huge impact because of its intelligent idea. People are really enjoying it, and I also thought the manga was cool.
And do you know why its name is First Penguin Requiem? Because penguins usually wait at the edge of the ice before diving into the sea to eat or move, but many times there may be predators waiting.
So what ends up happening is that the group of penguins only dives when a penguin that is already very hungry enters the water first, and normally the first penguins to fall into the water can become victims of predators.
So the manga used this penguin behavior for its title, First Penguin Requiem, since the “Leaders” are the penguins who enter first to scout the aberrants, but many of them end up dying.
