Japanese Horror Game BLACKOUT Challenges You to Identify Haunted Images

The psychological horror game BLACKOUT is a new horror experience built around a simple yet extremely unsettling concept. Players must analyze photographs and separate ordinary images from supernatural ones while strange events begin to affect the protagonist’s life.

The story follows Matsushita, a man who is currently away from work. During this period, he is tasked with organizing materials used in a television program about paranormal phenomena.

The problem begins when supernatural photographs become mixed together with normal images. From that moment on, the protagonist must carefully analyze each photo in order to classify them correctly.

While carrying out this seemingly simple task, his daily life gradually begins to change in disturbing ways. As players progress, increasingly strange events start to occur, turning the experience into a psychological horror journey.

The game’s concept revolves around observation. Players must look for unusual details, mysterious figures, or elements that suggest the presence of something supernatural within the images.

This mechanic is reminiscent of several recent horror titles based on analysis and observation, but here the focus is specifically on paranormal photographs. The sense of tension is reinforced by the retro pixel art visuals and the dark atmosphere present throughout the experience.

In addition to identifying the correct images, players will also witness the gradual deterioration of the protagonist’s everyday life.

BLACKOUT is being developed by independent creator UMINEKOwalKing. The project already has a Steam page and is described as a psychological horror adventure featuring pixel art graphics.

The main campaign is expected to last between two and three hours. Meanwhile, the demo version planned by the developers will offer approximately 30 minutes of playable content.

According to the information released, the game is scheduled to launch in the third quarter of 2026. The estimated price is 500 yen. To be honest, I hate horror games because I get scared easily. To this day, I’ve only played MiSide and Dino Crisis 1, but I found this game’s premise interesting.
