The topic generated many comments after a researcher of mysteries and urban legends found an old post that left one question unanswered: after all, who was Kai-chan?

It all started when a user found an old Yahoo! Answers thread from a person reporting a strange hotel billboard in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The sign displayed the hotel’s name and phone number, but it also featured a completely contextless phrase that simply said: “Come see Kai-chan!”
The message seemed simple, but it did not explain who Kai-chan was or why people should visit the location to see him. This led many to imagine explanations involving ghosts, urban legends, or even some kind of frightening character.
A researcher decided to investigate the case using archived versions of the hotel’s official website, which had already ceased operations.
The mystery became even stranger
While analyzing old pages from the establishment, he found a message that only increased the doubts of Japanese internet users. On one page, he found the following message:
“Come see Kai-chan! If Kai-chan is in your room…”
The sentence ended without much explanation but suggested that Kai-chan would appear in guests’ rooms! This led many people to believe that the story had some connection to supernatural phenomena.
On Japanese social media, several users commented that it sounded like the beginning of a horror story. Imagine staying at a hotel and having this mysterious “Kai-chan” appear in your room, whatever it might be.

Fortunately, the answer was far less frightening than many had imagined. Residents of the area eventually learned about the investigation and explained that Kai-chan was simply the hotel’s mascot: an otter-shaped stuffed toy.
The mascot was randomly placed in some rooms. Guests who found the doll during their stay received special benefits, such as a 50% discount or even a free short stay.
Once the explanation was revealed, the atmosphere of suspense quickly turned into amusement. Many Japanese people admitted they had expected something much darker and were relieved to discover that Kai-chan was just a friendly stuffed otter.
According to local residents, the hotel is currently closed and the famous billboard has already been removed. Even so, the story continued to attract attention because the area already had a reputation for being associated with spooky stories.
For that reason, even after the official explanation, some people say that the phrase “Come see Kai-chan!” still sounds a little strange when viewed out of context.
But fortunately, it ended up being something completely harmless.
