The Nami actress in One Piece, Emily Rudd, revealed that she insisted on wearing the character’s iconic miniskirt even during the winter filming of the second season of the live-action adaptation. The decision caught attention because the scenes were filmed in very cold temperatures, which suggested the production didn’t want her wearing the miniskirt, but the actress wanted to keep the look faithful to the original manga for the fans.

During an interview with InStyle magazine, costume designer Kerry Anne Barnard explained that the production team had to balance faithfulness to the design created by Eiichiro Oda with the practical challenges of filming in cold weather. The challenge appeared mainly when recreating some of the character’s classic outfits for the new season.

One example mentioned was the outfit used in the Reverse Mountain part of the story. In the manga, Nami wears a cropped vest combined with a very short skirt.

According to Barnard, the team tried to adapt some elements to protect Emily Rudd from the intense cold during filming. To do this, they added long sleeves to the outfit, since the character needed to perform several action scenes while filming in the middle of winter.

Even with those adjustments, the Nami actress in One Piece insisted on keeping the character’s original miniskirt. According to the costume designer, Emily Rudd herself pushed for that decision because she believed that staying faithful to the manga’s design was important for fans of the series.

Barnard also said that Emily commented she wanted to do it for the fans and wanted the look to be as accurate as possible to the original material, something that Netflix is not exactly known for prioritizing.

Nami is one of the most popular characters in One Piece and serves as the navigator of the Straw Hat Pirates. Throughout the manga and the anime, the character became known for her many outfits, although short skirts and tops are recurring elements in her design.
