At least from what I’ve seen, this is already the second time author Yuki Kawaguchi has had one of his manga canceled by Shonen Jump. Otr of the Flame ended with only 34 chapters.

Reactions have been very mixed, with many lamenting that another of his works was canceled, while others agree that the author genuinely struggles with storytelling.

“This series deserved more, man.”

“Jump must have something against this author.”

“His character designs are really cool, but the narrative is quite boring. If he switched to a more game-like character design style, it might suit him better.”

“Canceled, what a shame. Such a good story and art, it’s sad to see it end. I’ll be here for the final chapters, I can’t wait to see how it concludes.”

“I really think Kawaguchi should collaborate with a good writer and move to another magazine. Shonen Jump is extremely harsh when it comes to cancellations.”

“Everyone is complaining about the cancellation as if stories can’t simply end. Not every manga needs to be One Piece.”

“What a waste, Otr had great potential.”

Another manga by him that was canceled by Jump is titled The Hunters Guild: Red Hood, which had only 16 chapters. Compared to Otr, the author managed to develop the story more, but the competition at Shonen Jump is truly brutal.

Many people are suggesting that Yuki Kawaguchi leave Shonen Jump and try his luck at another magazine. Now we’ll have to wait and see what he decides to do next.
