Message from One Punch Man 3 Director Shinpei Nagai

The One Punch Man 3 director, Shinpei Nagai, directly addressed the fans, acknowledging their concerns and explaining his professional path before taking on this challenge:

“Hello everyone, nice to meet you.
I’m Shinpei Nagai, the director of One Punch Man Season 3.
I completely understand everyone’s reactions, but please calm down and hear me out.

I’ve worked as a freelancer from the very beginning, officially entering the anime industry with Hiiro no Kakera. I gained experience in hybrid 3D/2D animation through projects like Aquarion Logos, and later worked on titles such as GANGSTA. and Samurai Flamenco. After the closure of Manglobe, the studio I had always admired, I began a long-term collaboration with J.C. Staff.

When the opportunity to direct One Punch Man 3 came up, my focus was on creating a new workflow that bridges 2D and 3D to maximize production time.

I sincerely apologize for keeping quiet about some details, but please know the entire team is giving their best effort. I cannot share too much about production specifics yet, but I’ll answer what I can within limits.”

One Punch Man 3 Director’s Past Work in Hentai

One point that made part of the fanbase skeptical was the director’s past experience. Shinpei Nagai has directed a few hentai anime titles before taking on this major project:

  • Bishoujo (canceled hentai anime)
  • Buta Hime-Sama (hentai anime)

  • Dogeza de Tanondemita: Isekai-hen (short ecchi anime)
  • Dogeza de Tanondemita (short ecchi anime)
  • Danna ga Nani o Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken (short anime)
  • Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san (short yuri anime)

However, Nagai has also contributed in other roles to more mainstream series such as Samurai Flamenco, Saint Seiya Omega, Psycho-Pass, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 4, and Banana Fish.

He even commented on his earlier experiences:

“In fact, that online hentai project was the first time I experimented with a hybrid animation pipeline, where all the backgrounds were created in 3D, previewed as 2D layouts, and then combined with 2D animation—about 20 years ago. I’ve been experimenting and refining this approach ever since.”

Thanks to his transparency, many fans are now more open to giving him a chance, though some still worry about how One Punch Man 3 will turn out.
