Anime mal Feito de Yumemiru Danshi Provavelmente MATOU a Light Novel

Only now in 2026 have Japanese fans realized something: the Yumemiru Danshi light novel has simply stopped being updated! Okay, let me explain what happened.

Yumemiru Danshi originally started as a web novel written by Okemaru, who began writing it in 2018. In June 2020, the series started being published as a light novel, and a manga adaptation began serialization in 2021.

Everything seemed to be going well for the series, which is a romantic comedy. The light novel kept releasing volume after volume, and the manga was also doing well.

Yumemiru Danshi light novel

Yumemiru Danshi tells the story of Wataru Sajou, a student known at school for constantly chasing after his crush, Aika Natsukawa, confessing his love to her at every opportunity. One day, he realizes that his feelings are completely one-sided and decides to give up, distancing himself from her and living a more relaxed life with friends and other girls.

However, Aika then starts missing his attention and begins seeking him out. Anyway, in 2023 came what should have been the high point of the series: an ANIME adaptation… which ended up being a massive disaster, and we covered the situation involving Yumemiru Danshi here on the site at the time.

What Happened to the Yumemiru Danshi Anime?

Before I explain what went wrong, know that expectations for the anime were very high.

Yumemiru Danshi cidade de Hanamatsu

Yumemiru Danshi takes place in the city of Hamamatsu, and at the time, the mayor even promoted the anime in hopes that it would go viral and help boost tourism. This is actually quite common, as certain anime have that kind of power (and I will be making a post about one later today). The local government hoped Hamamatsu would become a “holy land” for fans, and expectations for the premiere were high.

But anyway, what went wrong?

To begin with, the animation quality was very poor, and people suspected that AI had been used. Take a look at some scenes:

Japoneses Desconfiam que Yumemiru Danshi esta usando IA pros Cenarios 2 Japoneses Desconfiam que Yumemiru Danshi esta usando IA pros Cenarios 3 Japoneses Desconfiam que Yumemiru Danshi esta usando IA pros Cenarios 6

These are just a few examples. There was also a particular episode that became very famous because the protagonist supposedly dyed his hair, but…

The protagonist buying hair dye at a store and dyeing his hair at home:

Yumemiru Danshi cor do cabelo 6 2 Yumemiru Danshi cor do cabelo 2

Him appearing at school after “dyeing his hair.”

Yumemiru Danshi cor do cabelo 6 1

What the girl said after seeing him with the exact same hair color: “You changed colors”

But that still wasn’t the worst part. The opening sequence of Yumemiru Danshi blatantly copied opening sequences from several other anime:

Abertura de Yumemiru Danshi copiou as Aberturas de Outros Animes Abertura de Yumemiru Danshi copiou Oregairu, Seishun Buta e Jaku-Chara Abertura de Yumemiru Danshi copiou Oregairu

And as if that weren’t enough, the anime also got one of its voice actresses’ names wrong in the credits.

Poorly Made Yumemiru Danshi Anime Probably KILLED the Light Novel

The Yumemiru Danshi anime premiered on Japanese television on July 4, 2023. Do you know what else stopped in 2023? The series’ web novel and light novel, and nobody seems to know anything about the author.

According to several websites I checked, Yumemiru Danshi has not been officially concluded, and Volume 8 remains the most recent release, having been published on April 1, 2023.

The web novel also stopped receiving updates without finishing the story. Its last update was in August 2023, and judging by the comments, many readers are begging the author to return, saying the novel is extremely good.

These are some reactions from Japanese fans regarding the situation:

  • “The disappointing anime adaptation caused the original work’s development to stop as well… and people still regret it today.”
  • “I followed both the web novel and the light novel version, so I was sad when updates stopped, but I didn’t expect the anime to end up… like that.”
  • “I loved the web version. It was really good.”
  • “It was one of my favorite works. I even made a pilgrimage to Hamamatsu. I still believe the hiatus is due to story structure issues.”
  • “What? There’s not going to be a continuation?”
  • “I remember dropping the anime after episode one because it made absolutely no sense.”
  • “This was really sad.”
  • “The anime really failed badly…”
  • “HJ has a lot of cases like this. Sometimes they have good works, but the adaptations completely lose their quality.”
  • “I read the original and felt a huge difference. It felt like it suddenly shifted from a shounen romcom to a shoujo romcom.”
  • “I followed the web novel and it was good. I want a continuation!”
  • “The first episode cut exactly the most important parts, leaving viewers unable to connect with the protagonist. It was a huge mistake right from the start.”
  • “This is the fault of whoever decided to adapt it into anime. It completely lost the charm of the light novel.”
  • “I liked the anime, but I was still sad.”
  • “I loved it so much that I still occasionally check the page to see if it has returned 😢”
  • “I think the author lost motivation after the anime’s failure.”
  • “I’ve seen several cases like this with light novels.”
  • “This was my favorite romance series. It’s sad that it stopped.”
  • “The anime and the original work simply weren’t a good match.”
  • “The original illustrations were difficult to adapt, and cutting the protagonist’s internal thoughts hurt the story a lot.”

This is another case similar to what happened with Osamake, except the author of Osamake publicly complained about the anime adaptation, while this author has remained silent.
