Japanese Cosplayer Complains About the Lack of Attention Male Cosplayers Receive
A Japanese cosplayer sparked a discussion on social media after complaining about the difference in attention that male and female cosplayers receive at events and online. According to him, even when men spend a lot of money on costumes and accessories, they can still receive far less attention than women wearing simpler and cheaper outfits.
His complaint quickly caught the attention of other cosplay fans, who shared their own experiences and opinions on the subject.

The man, known online as Shiiki, posted on X to complain about the way male cosplayers are treated.
According to him, a woman could spend around 7,000 yen on a ready-made costume and still receive plenty of praise simply by wearing a more revealing outfit.
Meanwhile, when it comes to men, he claims that even after spending around 30,000 yen creating costumes, equipment, and accessories, they often receive little to no attention. Below is a gallery of cosplays he has made:
The cosplayer himself said that realizing this reality had a significant emotional impact on him. For example, the photo below on his Twitter received only 4,600 views and one comment.
Other Cosplayers Disagreed
The comment sparked a major discussion among Japanese users. Some agreed that there really is a difference in the amount of attention received by male and female cosplayers, while others pointed out that men can also attract plenty of attention depending on the character and type of cosplay.
One suggestion was to focus on muscular characters or comedy cosplays, areas where some men can stand out precisely because of their creativity.
And several users decided to show examples of this.
One cosplayer revealed that he spent almost 100,000 yen on a costume, but still felt like nobody paid much attention to him.
Another user joked that men could simply focus on muscles and comedy to win over the audience.
There were also examples of cosplays made on much smaller budgets.
One showed a costume that cost only 7,000 yen, while another joked that he could make a Hitmonchan cosplay for the same amount.
Someone else showed off a MADAO cosplay from Gintama, claiming that he was approached by almost 500 people in a single day.
Some Cosplays Cost Practically ZERO
The discussion also ended up showing some of the cheapest cosplays possible.
One user revealed that he created a costume using only:
- A T-shirt he already had at home;
- Pants he normally wore;
- A cigarette butt taken from his ashtray;
- A marker to create the shadows on his face.
Result: 0 yen.
Other cosplayers also shared costumes that cost 6,000, 5,000, 4,000, or even 0 yen.
I mean, it’s obvious that women receive much more attention online than men, so being creative is really necessary if you’re a man trying to go viral online.
