A Hololive fan revealed that he had an incredibly uncomfortable experience at a company drinking party in Japan. After trying to keep his love for VTubers a secret, he eventually admitted his hobby to his coworkers, only to face awkward questions about his private life that left him dreading going back to work the next day.

The story was shared on X and quickly sparked debate among Japanese internet users. While some criticized the coworkers’ behavior as a form of sexual harassment, others questioned whether the story was even real or argued that this kind of teasing can happen when people reveal their personal interests in social settings.

Hololive Fan Faces Invasive Questions About His Private Life at a Company Party

In his post, the Japanese user 暇人🎪(立ちゴケ11) explained that he eventually admitted to being a Hololive fan during a company drinking party.

According to his account, he initially tried to dodge the subject but eventually gave in after his coworkers kept pressing him. Things took an uncomfortable turn when they started asking questions and making comments about his hobby.

Some of the questions and comments he recalled included:

  • “What is that?”
  • “Do you masturbate to your favorite VTuber?”
  • “I bet you even have a life-size figure of her.”

The fan explained that he had wanted to keep his interest in VTubers private precisely because he feared this kind of reaction. After the incident, he said he felt awful and didn’t even want to show up for work the following day.

Japanese Internet Users Are Divided Over the Hololive Incident

Reactions to the post were mixed. Some otaku who responded to the tweet felt that the coworkers had crossed the line, particularly because their comments involved explicit questions about the employee’s private life.

One commenter pointed out that asking someone whether they masturbate to their favorite character could even be considered sexual harassment. Others argued that, regardless of what someone thinks about another person’s hobby, there is no need to embarrass them like that in a professional setting.

Some users also suggested that the employee should talk to a supervisor instead of simply venting on X. Others said there was no reason to be ashamed of liking VTubers and that being more open about his interests might have prevented his hobby from becoming a target for teasing.

However, not everyone sided with the original poster.

Some users doubted the story and suggested it might have been made up. Others argued that people unfamiliar with VTubers might simply not know how to react when they discover someone is a fan.

Who Is the Employee’s Favorite VTuber?

Apparently, his favorite VTuber is Omaru Polka, a member of Hololive’s fifth generation who debuted in 2020.

I think something similar might have happened to me, too. I don’t remember the details very well, but I recall something along those lines happening a few years ago.

These days, it feels like pretty much everyone is an otaku anyway!
