Japan Launches Anime Fan Insurance That Covers Event Cancellations

Japan has just introduced an interesting new service for otaku: Anime Fan Insurance, which helps financially compensate fans who end up missing events related to their favorite artists.
The new service was launched by JCB (Japan Credit Bureau), one of Japan’s largest payment and credit card companies, in partnership with the insurance company Mysurance and the fan culture platform Oshicoco. The goal is to protect fans who spend money traveling to see their “oshi,” a Japanese term used to refer to their favorite idols or characters.
Anime Fan Insurance protects against losses from canceled events

The idea behind the new Anime Fan Insurance came from a situation that is quite common among Japanese fans: planning a trip to attend a concert, stage play, voice actor event, or special performance, only for everything to be canceled unexpectedly.
The insurance cannot ease the sadness of missing the chance to see your favorite artist, but it can help recover expenses such as hotel bookings, airfare, and other travel costs.
Mysurance explains that the service can cover cancellation fees for accommodations and transportation when fans have to cancel their trip due to unexpected circumstances.

According to a survey conducted by Oshicoco in February 2025 with 1,191 Japanese fans, about one in five respondents has experienced an event being canceled for reasons beyond their control, resulting in financial losses.
Among the affected fans, approximately one-third lost more than 30,000 yen (around $185) due to hotel and flight cancellations alone. In some cases, the losses exceeded 100,000 yen.
The service was designed primarily for fans traveling to attend idol concerts, voice actor appearances, stage performances, and other events related to Japanese pop culture.
The insurance is available in two different plans. The “Simple” plan covers situations such as transportation delays or unexpected hospitalization of the traveler or even a pet.

Meanwhile, the “Wide” plan offers broader protection, including official event cancellations, infectious diseases, and passport-related issues.
However, there are some requirements to purchase the service. Fans must buy the insurance within 14 days after booking their accommodations, and the departure date must be at least nine days away at the time of purchase.
