An academic study uncovered a rather curious case involving Doki Doki Literature Club fanfiction created with ChatGPT. According to the study, someone spent months asking ChatGPT to create stories about the girls from Doki Doki being pregnant!

Researchers from the University of Washington and the University of Colorado Boulder published a study titled “AI Fiction in the Wild,” which analyzed more than 500,000 anonymous English-language conversations conducted with ChatGPT models.

The research used the WildChat dataset, made up of conversations collected between April 2023 and May 2024 through a free chatbot hosted on Hugging Face. Participants had previously agreed that their conversations could be anonymously used for academic research.

Out of approximately 573,000 conversations analyzed, around 195,000 were classified as fiction. Among those, roughly 52,000 contained sexually explicit material, representing nearly 30% of all stories generated by users.

The researchers also found that only a small portion of users was responsible for most of the generated stories. The top 2% of users produced more than 80% of all fiction-related conversations.

Among these highly active users, researchers identified different behavioral patterns. Some created several versions of the same story before moving on to another topic. Others, called “infinite story demanders,” spent months requesting nearly identical stories while making only minor changes.

The most curious example cited in the study was a user who generated thousands of Doki Doki Literature Club fanfics with ChatGPT.

In nearly every request, the Doki Doki Literature Club character Natsuki went into labor, while the AI was instructed to continue the story by creating different endings.

The responses varied greatly. In some versions, emergency responders arrived in time and both the mother and baby survived. In others, the story unfolded in completely different ways despite starting from almost the exact same premise.

According to the researchers, this case was considered an “extreme outlier,” although many other users also showed a similar habit of repeating prompts multiple times to obtain slight variations.

Doki Doki Literature Club topped the list of most-mentioned franchises

The study also ranked the franchises most frequently mentioned in AI-generated fiction conversations.

Doki Doki Literature Club ranked first by a wide margin, with 22,381 mentions. It was followed by:

  • Freedom Planet — 5,204 mentions;
  • League of Legends — 4,514 mentions;
  • Naruto — 4,342 mentions.

The researchers themselves point out an important limitation: the dataset does not represent all ChatGPT users, since it was collected through a platform aimed at people more familiar with technology and online culture.
