Fim dos jogos físicos da PlayStation é confirmado para 2028 pela Sony

Normally this kind of topic wouldn’t even make it here on the site, but I thought it was really important to bring it here. Sony announced that the end of physical PlayStation games will happen starting in January 2028.

From that date onward, all new titles released for PlayStation consoles will only be available in digital format, purchasable through the PlayStation Store or through retailers selling digital codes.

According to the company, the decision follows changes in consumer behavior (the truth is they want to spend less while charging more), as the preference for digital media increasingly surpasses the purchase of physical discs (but in reality they want to keep charging you the same price while spending less).

Sony’s senior content communications director Sid Shuman explained that this transition will allow the company to align with how most of the community currently prefers to buy and play their titles (spending more to receive less).

In addition, Sony stated that it will continue investing in new ways of accessing games (like removing your access to games whenever they want), offering purchase options both on the PlayStation Store and through partner retailers selling digital versions.

It is worth noting that this change will only apply to new games released from January 2028 onward. Physical games released before that will still exist normally in the market while availability lasts.

Seeing people’s reactions, many are initially upset, because physical media is kind of a protection against companies banning you or taking away access to your games, and also because many people like collecting games.

Anyway, Sony is NOT going to lower game prices even with the end of physical media, and you can be sure prices will INCREASE—just look at Steam, which only sells digital games and still charges high prices.

Honestly, I rarely do this but… go f*ck yourself Sony.
