The Traumatic Ending of ImoKiss

In 2020, the author of Rakudai Kishi started publishing a new light novel called Kanojo no Imouto to Kisuwoshita, and he finished this light novel before finishing Rakudai. Its final volume was released this week and surprised everyone with its traumatic ending.

In this post you will find spoilers about how the light novel ends, the manga is still being published and we will see if this story ever gets an anime adaptation.

Introducing the characters:

Let’s introduce the characters and what happens in the story.

The protagonist is called Hiromichi, one day a girl named Haruka confesses to him and he accepts, the two start dating and he really loves his girlfriend.

One day his father tells him that a girl named Shigure will live with Hiromichi. Shigure ends up becoming Hiromichi’s stepsister and the two start living together, however Shigure is also Haruka’s sister.

What happens is the following, throughout the story, Hiromichi and Shigure fall in love with each other, and Haruka eventually discovers it, leading us to the events of the final volume.

Haruka is very angry and demands answers from her sister about why she fell in love with Hiromichi, she also asks her sister why she seduced her own sister’s boyfriend!

Shigure tries to explain herself but Haruka does not want to listen, she tells Shigure that she will never forgive her, Shigure tries to talk but the two end up physically fighting, for Haruka, Shigure deceived and manipulated Hiromichi into cheating on her.

Hiromichi looks for Haruka and plans to confess his true feelings to the girl who had been his girlfriend all this time, when he finds her she starts apologizing to him for her behavior until then.

Then she starts saying that they can fix their relationship, she wants another chance to start over, she says she can change herself for him, this leaves Hiromichi surprised because he expected her to fight and curse him for cheating on her.

Then Hiromichi says that he wants to break up with Haruka, upon hearing this she walks past him with tears in her eyes and asks if he regrets dating her, Hiromichi bursts into tears, the two talk a little more and thus their relationship truly comes to an end.

After their conversation we get Haruka’s point of view, she is walking and trying to reflect on everything that happened, she tries to think about how to get over Hiromichi and about her life, but this only makes her feel hopeless and desperate, she cannot accept how things ended when suddenly…

Shigure receives a phone call, Haruka was involved in a traffic accident, Shigure informs Hiromichi who freezes, speechless, Shigure concludes that Haruka must have tried to commit suicide after Hiromichi broke up with her.

Haruka suffered severe fractures and a head injury, causing internal bleeding, but she somehow managed to survive all of it, when she got better the two questioned her to find out whether she really tried to commit suicide or if it was all an accident.

When the two visit Haruka, they realize she is behaving strangely, she mentions past events as if they were current, they discover that she has post-traumatic amnesia.

For Haruka, the events of the last 3 months never happened, and she still believes she is dating Hiromichi.

Two days later we see Hiromichi taking Haruka’s situation very seriously, he locked himself in his room and is drowning in guilt, after all without Haruka’s memories it is impossible to know whether she tried to kill herself or not, however Hiromichi and Shigure assume that Haruka attempted suicide.

He believes Haruka tried to commit suicide because of him, he falls into despair at the possibility of having to tell Haruka once again about his true feelings (and thus repeating everything and maybe this time she could actually kill herself), then Shigure comes up with an idea on how to prevent Haruka from breaking again.

Shigure suggests that things return to how they used to be, a way for everyone to be happy, he would stay with Haruka while Hiromichi and Shigure would hide their relationship.

Ten years later…

Hiromichi wakes up and hears Haruka’s voice, the two continued their relationship, they ended up getting married and had a son together named Shinji.

Despite being together for 10 years, Hiromichi still does not feel the same love that Haruka feels for him, Haruka picks up their son from school and Hiromichi mentions that he will go out with friends after work, but that is an excuse.

After work, Hiromichi goes to his old house and rings the doorbell, Shigure answers, she works as a teacher and lives alone.

The two talk and Hiromichi feels tired, she offers her lap to him and he accepts it, Shigure wears a ring, which symbolizes the love between the two.

The two love each other, but Hiromichi promises himself that he will maintain this lie for as long as possible and deceive everyone so nobody gets hurt again, he does not care what he has to endure or what will happen to him.

In order to have these moments with Shigure, he is willing to live with someone he does not love and will carry this lie to the grave.

Funny enough, in the introduction post for this light novel I mentioned that this was a romantic comedy.
