The Suikoden anime is facing a “controversy,” as fans of the original game are unhappy with the anime version of a female character from the game.

Next year, the anime Gensou Suikoden, based on Suikoden II, will be broadcast, and the anime’s official profile has been gradually revealing the characters’ visuals. The latest to have her design revealed is Nanami.

In the story, Nanami is the protagonist Riou’s half-sister, adopted by Genkaku. Many players love her for being their little sister in the game.

However, the anime decided to change Nanami’s design, and some people are not happy about it. We recently had a similar case with the announcement of the Dragon Quest 7 remake, which altered Aishe’s original design, making the girl more covered.

Could this be the case here? Here’s how Nanami looks in the original game:

Now it’s time to see Nanami’s design for the Suikoden anime. Ready?

Isn’t she just cute? But this design has sparked a lot of online criticism. The official Suikoden anime account post reached a total of 1 million views with many complaints.

Suikoden Fans Criticize Nanami New Design for the Anime

And what’s the reason for the criticism? People didn’t like Nanami showing her midriff… normally, criticism happens when an anime or remake censors female characters, but it seems fans also dislike it when they show more skin.

The reactions:

  • The belly-baring outfit, the sleeveless top, and the tacky sandals — everything is completely out of place. Why ruin the original design so much?

  • KONAMI always betrays Suikoden fans. If the anime only airs next August, there’s still time to return to Fumi Ishikawa’s original design. Ignoring character designs is unforgivable.

  • Why is Nanami’s abdomen showing? I don’t want my favorite character to show so much skin! Also, her grandfather would never allow her to show her belly! She wasn’t raised to be like this!!

  • Why did they ruin Ishikawa-san’s design? I was so excited for the anime; now I’m sad.

  • Hmm… she looks like a completely different character.

  • Why is she dressed like an event hostess…?

  • Please, don’t change the character’s design.

  • Huh, huh?? Nanami’s outfit is different… I don’t really feel Nanami’s essence here…??

  • Like the protagonist of II, why change the characters’ designs so much? As a Suikoden fan, I just wanted the anime to match the game.

  • Why is she showing her belly? The area where she lives is in the north, a cold climate. She’s a country girl, raised by an old martial arts master, and doesn’t care about fashion. Showing shoulders and belly completely ignores the original plot, doesn’t it?

  • Is turning Nanami into a “moe” type just a sign of the times? I don’t like this skin exposure — it seems they’re targeting new fans and forgetting the old ones.

  • But we already have characters like Karen who show their belly! Was it really necessary to do this to Nanami?

  • Personally, given her personality, she would never wear such an outfit.

  • This is not Nanami. I can’t even hit “like.”

  • Just by looking at this illustration, you can’t feel respect for the original material. I hope at least the story is good.

  • My reaction was: “Who is this girl?” Can you please stop with the belly exposure?

  • If they’re going to make a worse version, I’d rather they not adapt it into an anime at all. Respect the original. This is not Nanami from Suikoden II

  • The person responsible for the design… did you play the original game? Please keep the design as it was.

However, at least some comments liked the design:

  • I think Nanami’s design, even if different, is good — she looks cute. I just want to see her moving in the anime. I’m excited for that.

I’ve never played Suikoden, I have no idea what the story is, but seeing Nanami’s anime design, I thought she looked really cute. I do understand the fans who are annoyed by the anime changing the original design.

What’s your opinion?
