Sora 2 Protects Disney and Marvel, But Not Japanese IPs

A new video generation model called Sora 2 was recently launched by OpenAI, and according to the description on its official website, it is more physically accurate, realistic, and controllable than previous systems.

However, it seems that only American IPs such as Disney and Marvel are protected from copyright infringement, while absolutely no Japanese IPs are safeguarded from the use of this generative AI.

This AI, Sora 2, has been able to replicate Nintendo characters almost perfectly. Yet, a recent demonstration of Sora 2’s capabilities went viral on a Japanese X (formerly Twitter) account for featuring many characters from famous Japanese anime.

There were fake clips of Dragon Ball and Naruto, as well as scenes with characters from Demon Slayer, Tokyo Ghoul, and even Studio Ghibli titles such as Spirited Away.

A game journalist told Yahoo Japan about the inconsistency in how Sora 2 restricts the generation of videos related to American media such as Disney and Marvel, but seemingly offers no protection at all for Japanese content.

“I tested Sora 2 myself, but I feel this represents a serious legal and political issue. We need to take immediate action if we want to protect Japan’s leading creators and the domestic content industry. I wonder why Disney and Marvel characters cannot be shown.”

Typing prompts like “Snow White” does make the system display a warning that it may violate the platform’s safety standards. However, the same warning does not appear for Japanese content, which can be generated freely without restriction.
