For those unfamiliar with Demon Slayer, Shinobu Kocho is one of the Hashira—the elite demon slayers—and is known for her elegant but modest attire.

CocoPie created her own version, featuring a deep neckline similar to Mitsuri’s outfit, giving rise to the Sensual Shinobu Cosplay debate.

Once CocoPie shared the photos on Facebook, comments quickly rolled in questioning the fidelity to the character:

  • If you wanted to show sensuality, why not cosplay Mitsuri?”

  • “This completely ignores Shinobu’s design and disrespects the series.”

Some accused her of “selling sex for attention,” calling it a “serious OOC” (Out of Character). Others even claimed that in the manga Shinobu burned any revealing outfits, so the cosplay was disrespectful.

CocoPie posted several of these critical messages and explained her perspective:

“It’s like I enjoy adding taro to hot pot and you don’t, but you come to my table to forbid me. Everyone has their own way to enjoy things.”

She emphasized that cosplay is both her hobby and part of her profession, and that everyone has the freedom to express themselves:

“You may not like it, but this is me. There are many ways to show love for cosplay.”

With humor, she added:

“I also used to criticize sexy cosplayers ten years ago, but I was wrong. Now I think… ‘boobs are wonderful.’”

CocoPie also shared screenshots of news outlets covering the criticism and said:

“Being criticized by people from my own country is both hilarious and surprising. I won’t stop cosplaying no matter what, because I love it.”

It’s worth noting that when she cosplayed Mitsuri in an equally bold style, she faced similar negative comments.

CocoPie’s stance highlights that cosplay is an art form open to personal interpretation—whether modest or daring.
