If Oshi no Ko Were a 90s Anime, Kana Would Have Ended Up in Her Underwear

Oshi no Ko became a major topic of discussion on social media following the beginning of the scandal arc, where Arima Kana becomes the central focus. In one episode, she goes to a director’s apartment, where he attempts to make advances on her.

In the scene, Kana is lying on the bed with the director on top of her when she suddenly begins to cry, saying she cannot do it because there is someone she likes.

This moment sparked a massive debate online. Many viewers sympathized with Kana and felt sorry for her, while others argued that she was wrong to reject the director’s advances. Even the voice actor of the director shared his opinion about the scene.

However, one tweet went viral and reached over 1 million views, highlighting what the user described as the difference between modern anime and a 90s anime. The tweet said:

“The episode of Kana’s almost casting couch situation in Oshi no Ko… if it were a 90s anime, she definitely would have ended up in her underwear, maybe even down to just her panties.”

What the fan meant was that if Oshi no Ko had been produced as a 90s anime, the scene would likely have emphasized her vulnerability through physical exposure, such as showing her in lingerie or partially undressed.

This perspective reflects how a 90s anime often portrayed heavier and more controversial scenes with less restraint compared to modern productions. Today, a scene like that in Oshi no Ko could easily trigger backlash and controversy.

Reactions:

“A ‘gentleman’ who stops when told to stop wouldn’t have accepted a casting couch situation in the first place.”

“I curse the Reiwa era.”

“Since it’s Young Jump, I think they would still have shown her undressing even today. The artist seems like the type who would do it enthusiastically. It was probably just a pacing decision.”

“If it were a 90s anime, the depiction might have been much more extreme…”

“It might not have stopped at just an attempt.”

“If it were an 80s anime, they would have shown Kana crying after it already happened.”

“I once wrote that if Suzume were a 90s anime, she would have lost her clothes during the battle. Back then, they often made heroines lose their clothes.”

“That’s true, but given the situation, it didn’t seem like he would have stopped.”

“I expected them to show it, but since they didn’t, my opinion actually improved.”

“If it had gone that far, I think her eyes would have looked lifeless. The fact she showed emotion is what makes her Kana.”

“More than being about a 90s anime, it’s more about it being a solo work by Mengo Yokoyari.”

“The fact that the man is portrayed as a charming and handsome older man is already considerate. In a 90s anime, he probably would have been an unattractive middle-aged man.”

Some of these comments do make sense. If Oshi no Ko were produced like a 90s anime or as a solo work by Mengo Yokoyari, the scene might have gone further before Kana broke down emotionally.
