Man Arrested in Japan for Threatening Woman After Claiming to Hold Her Parakeets Hostage

On February 7, between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., a woman in her 20s living in the city of Nanyo, Yamagata Prefecture, began receiving disturbing messages on her cellphone.
The sender was a 26-year-old man she knew personally. The content of the messages quickly revealed the seriousness of the situation. The man claimed he had taken the woman’s parakeets hostage and made it clear that there was only one way to save them. According to him, she needed to return home immediately.
In one of the most alarming messages, he stated that there was no other way to save the parakeets unless she came back. At another point, he intensified the pressure by suggesting that four lives were at risk, referring to the woman’s four birds.
The situation appeared to be a clear attempt at emotional manipulation. The man even said that if she apologized over the phone, he might spare the animals. Even so, the woman did not give in to the threats.

Instead of returning home, she made a safer decision and contacted the police, reporting everything that was happening. Authorities then went to the location, found the man, and arrested him on suspicion of coercion.
The case quickly drew attention not only because of the crime itself, but also because of the unusual way it was carried out. The fact that someone used pets as a tool for threats shocked both investigators and the public who learned about the story.
Despite the arrest, one detail left many people concerned. Police did not publicly confirm whether the parakeets were safe after the incident. This silence generated even more anxiety, as authorities typically do not hesitate to announce when animals are rescued unharmed.
So, are the birds okay? WE DON’T KNOW. Police have not released ANY information. And what is the relationship between the woman and the man? WE ALSO DON’T KNOW. Police were unusually secretive in this case.
