Nakano Bon Odori, held on August 2nd and 3rd, is a traditional Japanese dance festival celebrating Obon, attracting thousands of participants annually. However, controversy arose during the pre-festival event, called Pink Bon Odori, held on August 1st at Nakano Central Park, near JR Nakano Station.

During the event, adult performers affiliated with the SOD (Soft on Demand) production company appeared in yukatas, dancing to music with adult-themed lyrics. The highlight was the installation of the Magic Mirror Car, a vehicle used for adult video (AV) recordings, which was displayed publicly, including to minors attending the area.

For those familiar with AVs, this type of vehicle often features in infidelity-themed films, where one partner enters the vehicle while the other remains outside. Those inside can see out, but outsiders cannot see in, allowing participants inside to engage in certain activities.

Residents and District Reaction

The event, held in a mixed area of private and public land (partly managed by Nakano Ward), drew criticism on social media. Many residents expressed concern about exposing adult content in a family-friendly public space:

  • “I will never attend this event, nor will I let my children. Using public spaces for adult content is unacceptable.”

  • “Pink Bon Odori? This is disgusting and shouldn’t be allowed in a public park.”

In response, on August 8th, Nakano Ward and Tokyo Tatemono (park management) issued an official statement demanding the removal of all posts related to the Magic Mirror Car, noting that the vehicle had been installed without permission and that the event violated public conduct rules.

Nakano Ward stated it had no prior knowledge of the event’s content. The public space application only mentioned the pre-festival event, and the AV vehicle was placed in the park without notice. The district emphasized that future authorizations will be carefully reviewed to ensure all planned activities are appropriate.
