Gundam GQuuuuuuX and Improvised Scenes: Director Reveals Production Secrets

The anime Gundam GQuuuuuuX caught attention for its bold proposal to revisit the events of the 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam in an alternate universe. But beyond the story itself, a curious detail about its production was revealed: director Kazuya Tsurumaki admitted that many scenes and even story points were created through improvisation.

In an interview with Zero NiGo, Tsurumaki explained that, although he had a basic structure in mind, the production didn’t follow a strict script. Instead, he worked episode by episode, leaving room for new ideas to emerge during the process.
According to him, several key moments of the anime were not in the original plan and were developed on the spot, aiming to make the series more engaging and surprising.

The director confessed that, at first, he intended to stick to a clear plan, but later changed his approach when he felt the series could be made more exciting. In his words, if he thought a scene could be more interesting in another way, he would drop the original idea and rewrite it on the fly.
“I believed we could make a good anime if we started with a proper plan and followed it through to the end, and that was what I initially intended to do,” Tsurumaki said. “But as we worked on the anime, I began to feel that I wanted it to be more interesting. For example, if we had a set plan for how and where something would happen in the story, thinking it could be improved, I would just throw away the original idea completely and turn it into something more entertaining. That’s how the anime turned out like this.”

Another interesting point Tsurumaki shared was the reaction of Hideaki Anno, creator of Evangelion and screenwriter of Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Contrary to Tsurumaki’s initial worries, Anno was thrilled with the improvisational approach and became even more motivated to work on the project.
