The creator of Ajin, Gamon Sakurai, known for his work on Ajin: Demi-Human, denied being a specialist or fanatic when it comes to military topics. According to him, before he began drawing the series, he did not even know what an M4 rifle was. Although he enjoys American action movies, he stated that he had no technical knowledge about firearms.

The statement surprised many readers, since Ajin features numerous scenes involving guns, tactical gear, and highly detailed combat sequences. In response to the discussion, he explained that the secret lies not in personal experience, but in intensive research.

According to the author, whenever he needed to draw specific equipment, he immersed himself in reference materials. In one arc involving tactical operations, he revealed that he invested over one million yen solely in gathering information and materials to ensure visual accuracy. For him, the quality of the final result is directly tied to the budget and the time dedicated to research.

He and also mentioned that after going through what he described as a true “research hell,” he considered using fictional weapons in future works to reduce the workload. However, even when attempting to create original firearms for his characters, he spent about six months just defining the main weapons for the core group.
He made it clear that his priority has always been to deliver a convincing work to readers, even if it requires high investment and long periods of study.
