Fate Watch Order by NTT Docomo Excluded the Deen Anime

The recent discussion about the Fate watch order has taken over the otaku community after an official recommendation caused backlash among fans. The controversy began when a suggested list for beginners completely ignored one of the oldest adaptations of the series, the 2006 anime produced by DEEN.
Fate Watch Order by NTT Docomo Excluded the Deen Anime
The controversy started when the Japanese company NTT DOCOMO released a list with the Fate watch order on its anime streaming platform. The recommendation suggested watching in this order:
- Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works
- Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel
- Fate/Zero
- Fate/strange Fake

The goal was to help new fans enter the universe of the franchise, which began with the visual novel Fate/stay night, released in 2004.
However, the biggest issue was the absence of the 2006 anime version produced by Studio Deen, which adapts the so-called “Fate route” — considered by many to be the foundation of the story.
Why did excluding the Deen version cause so much criticism?
The exclusion of the classic version quickly generated criticism on social media. For many fans, this adaptation may have technical flaws, but it is still essential to understand the full narrative.
Some comments from Japanese fans clearly show the division of opinions:
“Don’t pretend the DEEN version doesn’t exist.”
“Why ignore the Saber route?”
“Whoever made this list clearly hasn’t watched everything.”
“Fire whoever made this decision!”

On the other hand, there were also criticisms of the 2006 version itself, with some users stating:
“This version is outdated and hard for new fans.”
“The Saber route is boring.”
“Nowadays, only Fate/Zero is worth watching.”
Debate continues among fans
The discussion about the best Fate watch order continues among Japanese fans without a definitive answer. Some prefer starting with the more modern adaptations, while others defend following the original order for a more complete experience.
