Sword Art Online Echoes of Aincrad caught players’ attention after revealing a feature that promises to make the experience much more intense. The new action RPG will include the so-called Death Game Mode, a mode where dying in the game means completely losing your saved progress.

The title was announced by Bandai Namco and is scheduled to launch on July 9 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while the PC version via Steam will be released on July 10. Just like in the original Sword Art Online story, the player will be trapped in the world of Aincrad, where survival becomes a core part of the experience.

During an interview with the Japanese website Denfaminicogamer, Sword Art Online series producer Yosuke Futami and the game’s head of production Yasuhiro Yahata explained how the idea for the Death Game Mode in Sword Art Online Echoes of Aincrad came about.

According to Futami, the initial concept of the game was even more focused on survival. The original idea involved carefully managing stamina, energy, and resources to avoid dying in the game. Over time, the project was adjusted into a more traditional action RPG, keeping only some elements from the early concept.

It was during this process that the Death Game Mode was created. The idea was to develop an optional mode that would convey the same sense of danger that defined the anime’s story. In this mode, if the player is defeated, the entire save file is deleted, forcing the player to start over from the beginning.

Futami said the goal was to capture the essence of the series, where every battle demands the player’s full attention. Avoiding enemy attacks and playing carefully becomes essential, creating a more tense and strategic playstyle.

The game will feature four difficulty levels: Story, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard. The Death Game Mode can be combined with any of these difficulties, allowing players to choose the type of experience they prefer.

For example, players who just want to enjoy the story can use Story mode together with Death Game Mode. Meanwhile, those looking for an extreme challenge can activate the mode on Very Hard difficulty.

Even so, the developers warn that dying will be relatively common, especially for players experiencing the game for the first time. Some battles involve multiple enemies at once, along with a variety of bosses that promise intense encounters.

Despite the difficulty and some dungeon traps that can summon several monsters at once, the team emphasized that the game was not designed to be a soulslike. According to Yahata, the goal has always been to create an accessible and enjoyable action RPG while maintaining the unique identity of the Sword Art Online franchise.
