Is MangaDex Going Legal? Here’s What Changed

In recent days, a strong rumor has emerged claiming that MangaDex is going legal after internal changes and the creation of a corporate structure in the United Kingdom. The information is not official, and there is no confirmation that the manga piracy site is abandoning piracy, but several signs have sparked discussions within the community.
Is MangaDex Going Legal? Here’s What Changed

It all started when the Anime Updates profile published an article on X titled “Manga Piracy Site MangaDex Has Already Gone Legal.” According to their research, MangaDex began operating under an entity registered in the United Kingdom called MANGADEX UK LTD. This company is reportedly linked to NamiComi, the platform that took over management of the site after MangaDex received thousands of DMCA notices.
According to previous statements, NamiComi provided the legal framework necessary to ensure the platform’s long-term sustainability. This led many to interpret that MangaDex is going legal gradually, instead of operating solely as an aggregator of unlicensed content.
Despite this, it is important to emphasize that nothing has been officially confirmed as a complete transition to a fully legal model. The site itself has previously stated that it supports free access to content, which raises questions about how a regulated model would actually work.

Another factor fueling the rumor that MangaDex is going legal is the recent accelerated removal of manga containing explicit scenes involving minors. Since the company is registered in the United Kingdom, it may be subject to stricter laws, such as the Online Safety Act, as well as other British regulations concerning the depiction of minors, including in drawings.
These changes have led part of the community to believe that MangaDex is becoming legal in order to avoid legal risks and potential blocks. At the same time, there is a gray area, since the site’s terms also reference United States law, which could result in different interpretations depending on the case.
In the end, the situation remains uncertain. What exists so far is a set of indications suggesting an attempt at greater legal organization. However, claiming that MangaDex is going legal at this moment is still speculation. MangaDex has already stated that it “will not become a Crunchyroll,” but we will have to wait and see.
