Lycoris Recoil Was Originally Planned to Be Much Darker

Did you know that Lycoris Recoil was originally going to be MUCH DARKER than it ended up being? Did you watch Lycoris Recoil? It’s an original anime by A-1 Pictures, directed by Shingo Adachi, with scripts written by Asaura.
The story takes place in a Japan where orphan girls are trained to become the country’s military force, eliminating anyone who threatens the nation’s peace and replacing trained soldiers.
The anime is extremely colorful and features many action scenes between the girls and poorly trained criminals who always end up getting defeated.

Both are part of the special forces responsible for maintaining peace in Japan, but after making mistakes during missions, they were removed from the main squad and reassigned to other duties.

Lycoris Recoil Was Originally Planned to Be Much Darker
In an interview with the anime staff published on the Animate Times website, it was revealed that when production of Lycoris Recoil began, the original idea was for the anime to have a severely dark military tone.
However, everything changed when director Shingo Adachi joined the project. He was responsible for changing the anime’s tone. His thinking was: “An anime that makes you feel depressed after watching it is not really something people want nowadays, and in that aspect, you still can’t surpass Gunslinger Girl.”

I’ve never watched Gunslinger Girl, but I know it’s another anime about young girls who fight using guns (just like Lycoris Recoil), but with a much more serious tone.
Because of the director’s decision, Lycoris Recoil became a more colorful anime that focuses more on the relationship between the two main characters, Chisato and Takina, instead of being a dark military-focused story.

So, do you appreciate the change the director made, or would you have preferred the darker original version? Let us know in the comments!
