Yokoyari Mengo Talks About Returning to Her Dark Romance Manga Roots After Oshi no Ko

You probably know Yokoyari Mengo as the illustrator of the manga Oshi no Ko, but before the massive success of Oshi no Ko, she was already publishing her own works, and I’d say that all of them featured situations involving sex.

One of the first manga I read by Yokoyari Mengo was You Are Dirty, My Queen, where she was responsible only for the artwork while the story was written by Lynn Okamoto. The series is full of lewd elements, but I honestly thought it was really good.

Another very famous manga by her, which also received an anime adaptation, is Scum’s Wish. It contains a lot of sexual content, but also heavy themes like betrayal and emotional chaos. Because of her sexually charged stories with serious undertones, Yokoyari Mengo has built a large female fanbase that really enjoys this type of narrative. Recently, a fan posted about the “change in her fanbase” after Oshi no Ko:

Kimi wa Midara na Boku no Joou

“I always had the impression that Yokoyari Mengo was a mangaka supported by women from otaku culture who related to complicated stories about sex and romance. But after Oshi no Ko, her audience completely changed. Mengo ended up going very far…”

What this person meant is that Mengo’s fans used to be women from otaku culture who enjoyed manga aimed at a female audience and weren’t afraid of heavier, more intense stories. Now, however, her audience has become mainstream, since Oshi no Ko reached a much wider public.

However, Yokoyari Mengo herself saw the tweet and decided to comment on her new work.

“Just wait, because now I’m drawing exactly that kind of manga again, all in 😘”

Próximo Mangá da Yokoyari Mengo será Safadinho

In another tweet, Mengo mentioned that whenever she draws her own storyboards, that kind of content naturally appears. And there you have it: Yokoyari Mengo is working on a new manga, and it looks like it will definitely include plenty of spicy content.

Japanese Reactions:

  • After reading Retort Pouch! when I was a kid, I turned into a perverted brat. Thank you so much for that back then.
  • I want to reread Scum’s Wish, but part of me is afraid it might not hit me the same way anymore.
  • Honestly, Scum’s Wish is still my favorite to this day.
  • Just hearing this makes me feel like I can wait forever.
  • Thank you so much 😭😭😭 I’ve been waiting for this for so long.
  • You can team up with Okamoto-sensei again, you know.
  • This makes me incredibly happy.
  • Oh my god, I’m seriously so happy. I love Mengo-sensei’s toxic romance manga.
