Hana-Kimi Anime vs Manga Comparison Highlights Major Differences

The new anime season is already in full swing, and one of the series that premiered is Hana-Kimi: For You in Full Bloom, a manga that was published between 1996 and 2004, totaling 23 volumes, by the late author Nakajo Misaya, who unfortunately is not here to witness her manga finally receiving an anime adaptation.
Interestingly, before this anime version of Hana-Kimi, the series received four live-action adaptations, which I discussed in more detail here.
However, we are here to compare the Hana-Kimi anime with the manga. Since it is a manga from the 1990s, Hana-Kimi features all the exaggerated expressions and situations we expect from works of that era.
Unfortunately, the anime did not bring this aspect into its adaptation. Check below the comparisons between the Hana-Kimi anime and manga:

As can be seen from the comparisons, the characters’ expressions are much stronger in the manga than in the anime, which ended up feeling more “serious.”

Synopsis of Hana-Kimi: For You in Full Bloom
After seeing Izumi Sano at a high jump competition, Mizuki Ashiya becomes completely enamored with him—to the point of moving from the United States to Japan and enrolling in the same academy as him. However, Sano’s academy is an all-boys school!
Thanks to her bright and outgoing personality, Mizuki quickly befriends her classmates without raising suspicion about her gender. To her surprise, she ends up becoming not only Sano’s classmate but also his roommate. Although she can now admire Sano up close, Mizuki learns that he has quit high jumping and refuses to take up the sport again for unknown reasons. Moreover, the academy’s doctor, Hokuto Umeda, may be onto Mizuki’s disguise. Now, Mizuki must find a way to reignite Sano’s passion—all without revealing her secret.
