Illustrator Discovers how to Increase Engagement on Social Media

What’s the secret to achieving great reach on social media, especially on Twitter? Although I’m sure the same method also works for Facebook and other platforms, it seems that one illustrator has discovered the secret to engagement.
Illustrator Discovers how to Increase Engagement on Social Media
Amamine is an illustrator who has two Twitter profiles. Her main account has over 68,000 followers, while her second account has just over 2,000 followers. Yet, one of her illustrations on the second profile reached nearly 4 million views. Why?
Here we have Amamine’s theory, which she shared with us:
“I’ll tell you a scary story.
I posted an illustration on my secondary account under conditions that supposedly made it easier to appear on Twitter’s recommendations. Even though it has far fewer followers than my main account, I got way more likes there than on my main profile. Isn’t that scary?”
The illustration was part of the Irasutoya challenge (which we previously covered here on the site).

But what would explain such a big discrepancy? Amamine explains:
“What I’m trying to say is, Twitter seems to decide whether to put a post in recommendations based on the engagement the post receives in relation to the account’s follower count. Since many of my followers on my main account are inactive, this puts me at a big disadvantage, and that’s why my account isn’t growing.”
This was later confirmed when someone asked Grok, who explained:
“The X recommendation algorithm (especially the ‘For You’ timeline) emphasizes engagement (likes, reposts, replies, etc.) as the main factor for visibility and tends to value the engagement rate (the ratio between engagement and followers) more than the follower count itself.”
I can confirm this is something I’ve always noticed on Facebook as well: smaller pages often get more interaction than larger ones.
Take for example the Você Sabia Anime page, which has 200,000 followers, and the Crazy for Anime Trivia page, which has 50,000. There have been several times when Crazy’s page reached millions of views that Você Sabia Anime never achieved, despite having more followers.
Larger pages, because they have more inactive followers, end up at a disadvantage. That’s why it might actually be a good strategy to create a smaller second profile to gain more active followers and grow faster.
